Shipwreck Beach
Shipwreck beach on Keoniloa Bay, a gorgeous long white sand beach with crystal clear water, ends in a rocky headland. It’s from these cliffs that Harrison Ford and Anne Heche plunged into the ocean in “6 Days and 7 Nights.” Many people have followed suit and some got seriously injured – don’t try it. Rather take a walk along the breathtaking wilderness shoreline trail, accessible from the beach, or just stroll the beach, picking up shells.
Sunny almost year round this beach is not recommended for swimming novices, except during calm summer days. It’s loved by strong swimmers and surfers who enjoy the challenge offered by the powerful waves. The beach is steep and waves break right on the sand. In summer it’s a popular surfing spot and windsurfing all year round; fishing takes place at Makawehi Point.
Two resorts front the beach and here you will find restaurants, bars and shops – so Shipwreck offers you the best of both worlds. There are restroom and parking facilities but no lifeguards. Shipwreck is only 14 miles (20 minutes) from Lihue Airport.
