Salt Pond Beach Park

Salt Pond Beach Park is next to the only natural salt ponds still in operation in Hawaii, hence the name. The salt ponds are strictly for the use of Native Hawaiians, you’re only allowed in there with a permit. It’s a 30 minute, 18 mile drive from Lihue Airport and very popular with the locals.

The beach is protected by a reef and is a favorite for safe swimming all year round. Rocks formed a small lagoon which is ideal for toddlers and there are tidal pools to explore, so bring the kids. Camping is allowed with a County permit and the park has full facilities. Lifeguards are on duty.

Sunsets are awesome, windsurfers love this place and snorkeling is good on either side of the pond. Not good for surfing as the reef protects the bay from surf swells. Be careful on the rocks, its slippery and large waves break there. The water is beautifully clear, the sand is white and soft - this place is great for a family holiday.
