Driving south, only half an hour (13 kilometers) from Lihue Airport is Poipu Beach, now Kauai’s premier resort and winner of numerous “Top 5” beach awards. This gorgeous, protected beach will often, during winter, be found to be calm like a pond, while the North shore beaches are stormy. White sand and clear blue water, grassy areas, excellent facilities and a protective reef makes it such a favorite for swimming, snorkeling and body boarding. For experienced surfers there are surf breaks offshore.
Despite the protection from large waves onshore, there is still a danger in the water in the form of strong currents. As everywhere in Kauai one also needs to be careful of slipping on the rocks and sharp coral. During peak holiday season Po’ipu becomes very crowded so it’s not the place for you if you want solitude.

There is also an excellent playground for children, lifeguards on duty and the sunny weather all year round makes it a natural choice for families. We even saw a seal at rest on the beach while we were there. The kids thought that was great though we had to keep them back from the seal as they can get a little aggressive if they feel threatened.
