Makua Beach
A beautiful beach with a huge reef, making it a snorkeler’s haven, Makua Beach is one of the best on Kauai. It got the name Tunnels from the surfers and divers who have seen the tube and found the caverns. The scenic mountains were filmed in South Pacific, come and drink in its splendor. During the summer months the inner reef provides safe swimming for children while the outer reefs are better left to the expert divers and snorkelers.
During winter months the reefs provide perfect waves for the surfers but the shallow, sharp reefs are very dangerous. There are strong currents and the waves breaking in the rocks can sweep you away, be careful out there and heed the warning signs.
Tunnels is also great for scuba diving and windsurfing, collecting shells, camping and family picnics. It is a very popular beach so arrive early because parking can become a problem later in the day. There are houses available at reasonable rent if you want to make Tunnels your base. There is a lifeguard station toward Bali Hai and bathroom facilities at Haena Beach Park, west of Tunnels. Tunnels is about an hour’s drive from Lihue.
