Ke-e Beach
38 kilometers, a one hour drive from Lihue airport, on the north shore, Ke-e is the furthest accessible beach you can reach by car – and also one of the most beautiful on earth. It is protected by a reef and safe for swimming and excellent snorkeling (the lagoon) when the surf is small during the calm summer months. Our children loved this beach. It was our family favorite - it really is just stunning.
Scuba diving and fishing are also popular pastimes, but the beach is not ideal for surfing. The famous Kalalau trail starts here, taking you to historic sites like the Taylor Camp (the hippie colony of days gone by) and views of the Na Pali coastline.
However, like most beaches in Kauai, swimming can become extremely dangerous during adverse conditions – heed the warning signs and respect the ocean. The shoreline is sandy with rocks shelves and a rocky point, the water is beautifully clear during calm conditions.
Ke’e is one of the most popular beaches during summer months, arrive early to get parking and take a walk when it is still quiet. Bring your picnic basket and stay for the day, there are sufficient facilities but sometimes no life-guards. This beach is another popular movie location, remember the mini-series Thornbirds? You simply can’t miss the astonishing Na Poli sunset, promised to take your breath away.
