Kalapaki Beach

Kalapaki Beach is a natural harbor, only 2 miles or 10 minutes drive from Lihue airport. The harbor provides safe swimming, and further out sailing and surfing of all levels; it’s a good place to learn to surf (instruction available.) Because of the sheltered cove all water sports can be enjoyed here at all times of the year, which is not the case with many other beaches. Not a good spot for snorkeling though.


The beach is perfect for families – building sandcastles, playing beach games like volleyball, catamaran and kayak tours available nearby. All amenities are available, also a great choice of restaurants within walking distance or right on the beachfront. There are no lifeguards on duty.


The shoreline may be protected from huge waves, but never be deceived by the oceans of Hawaii, there are strong currents and the waves breaking on the rocks and reefs can be treacherous. After heavy rains the water can become rather murky. Even then, relax and watch anything from canoes to large cruise ships enter and leave Nawiliwili Harbor.


You will also find the Hanama’ulu Beach Park here. Obtain a county permit and camp for a night or two. The facilities include restrooms with showers, tables and barbecue facilities.
