Think beach and beauty and you’ll think Hanelei Bay Beach

Hanelei Bay Beach – a two mile long, half-moon white sandy shoreline, engraved into the supporting layer of a sheer cliff on the one side and rocks on the other side of the bay. Overlooking the bay are magnificent mountains with waterfalls, reflecting in the early morning sun when the bay is like a mirror. About an hour’s drive from Lihue airport (31 miles) Hanelei will take your breath away.

Swimming can take place all year round but is best done during summer when the lifeguards are on duty, always follow their instructions on where to swim safely. There are strong currents and forceful waves breaking on sandbars in some places. Some days, while the north shore may be too rough for safe swimming, the western curve will still be relatively quiet. This is a surfer’s haven - no wonder many world champions call this place home, keep your eyes open for a masterful display of wave riding. At the Pier on the east side the Hanelei river flows into the sea.

Body boarding, paddling and fishing are popular past times, but it’s not the best place for snorkeling. Wonderful for family picnics and beach walks, full facilities are available. During summer sailboats from all over the world will lie at anchor in the bay. Watching the sun set after a perfect day will be a treasured memory for the rest of your life.
