Anini Beach, one of the safest and most protected

An approximate 45 minute drive from Lihue Airport and 28 miles later you’ll find Anini Beach, one of the safest and protected by Hawaii’s largest coral reef, running across the entire length of the beach. This beautiful haven was called Wanini but the “W” fell off the name sign many moons ago, it was never repaired and the name became Anini! Don’t you just love it? It’s typical of the laidback lifestyle you find on this island.

The reef offers protection even when the swell is large, but there are dangerous waves on the outer reefs. A great place to holiday with young children due to the shallow waters, even far out; it is a haven for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and wind surfing enthusiasts. Long board surfers will have to look elsewhere and probably not Anini beach for the famous Hawaii wave.

Out on the bluff you see the houses of many rich and famous – “Honeymoon in Vegas” was filmed on location here. Anini beach is usually quiet, there are many houses (maybe people think it’s a private beach, so let’s keep the secret.) Have a look for the “Beach Access” walkways between houses. Full facilities, including convenient parking available; if you want to camp you need to obtain a county permit.

Best time for safe swimming is during the summer season, however there are no lifeguards are on duty. The water is clear and almost like a lake because of the protection; the shoreline sandy with rock shelves and points. Be careful of the rocks – slippery and the coral is sharp, some people also find the sand pretty rough, take your sandals. So, pack your picnic basket, get there no later than mid-morning to get a great picnic spot (trees and tables near the water) and just chill…
